How Swamp Cabbage Brewery began:
Douglas Boyd and Edward Boyd, two Columbia brothers, started home brewing over 15 years ago. They found that they LOVED craft beer – brewing it and drinking it! In 2012, they saw an opportunity to build their own commercial brewery, because there were no craft breweries in Columbia at that time. They mulled it over; prayed about it; they mulled, they prayed, and then Doug got the idea to see what his friends thought of his homemade craft beer.
He tailgated with pals one football weekend, and he supplied the beer. He asked them how they liked it, and LIKED IT they did! They encouraged him to go for it… to build and open a craft beer brewery. At that point, Ed and Doug decided to start looking for a location.
They found it on Brookwood Drive off Bluff Road near Williams Brice Stadium. There was a large warehouse in the back of the building and an office in the front of the building. They envisioned a brewery in the rear and a taproom in the office area. A concrete pad was next to the building and they pictured a pergola built over the patio with lots of picnic tables for their customers. And that’s exactly what they have today! Now they will be celebrating their 5th year anniversary on August 25, 2019!
Swamp Cabbage Brewery holds regular events to bring in new faces and allow folks to try out the variety of beers they have on tap. Firkin Friday is every Friday, where they tap a small keg and sell pints for only 3 bucks. They’re looking for feedback from their guests… if the firkin sells well, that experimental beer may go into regular production. This was how two of their big sellers were discovered: Butter Beer & Garnet & Blackberry.
No matter what pleases your palate, they have what your glass needs. From light to hoppy, crisp to full-bodied – and everything in between – Swamp Cabbage beers run the gamut and you are bound to find something that satisfies and delights your tastebuds . They offer a variety but usually have these favorites available in the Summer:
- Tropical Blonde
- Red-Tro IPA
- Sabal Palm Blonde
- Ruby Red IPA
- Chitpotle Watermelon
- Brewski Brothers White IPA
Creating the right vibe at the brewery:
They wanted a relaxed vibe at Swamp Cabbage Brewery. “We were going for a homey, family-friendly, relaxed atmosphere,” said Maria Boyd, Doug’s wife. “We opened up the taproom with a swamp theme, built the pergola and now roofed it”
Hang out any old time (they’re open from Wednesday – Sunday) and play board games, cornhole, drink, chill out and make friends. Swamp Cabbage Brewery is definitely welcoming. You’ll feel right at home as soon as you enter.
Or come for a special event like Brunch at the Brewery (very popular 4-course extravaganza and held the last Sunday of the month) or for one of their Crab Fests or Oyster Fests with AYCE crablegs and oysters. Thursday is Running Club where you join fellow runners for a 2.5 mile jaunt around the area, then pop in to cool down with a pint or two. $1 off pints, and 10% off food. Starts at 7PM every Thursday. Or come to their Annual Luau, held in early summer each year, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis. Beer with Jesus is every Wednesday evening, a Bible study group led by Scott Smoak, which starts at 6PM.
Don’t care for beer? That’s okay. They now offer wine to their guests as well! It’s all about pleasing the customer, making lasting friendships, and expanding the craft beer community in Columbia.
