Thursday, 3/14, is National Pi Day, and Kaminsky’s Dessert Cafe in the Vista is running an awesome special to celebrate!
From 4-8 PM, enjoy their Signature Pies for only $3.14 a slice!
Now, everything that Kaminsky’s produces is simply sublime, but these seven pies are truly their PIEce de résistance (see what I did there?).
I’ve taken it upon myself to rank them, but it’s your job to choose which one you want! I promise you, it won’t be easy. It certainly wasn’t easy putting all of them in order.
7. Cherry Pie
Coming in at #7 is a pie classic.
Now, judging by pie standards, Cherry Pie doesn’t rank too high on my list. Cherries are extremely sweet raw, and even more so when baked. And, this music video doesn’t do its reputation any favors (I can’t decide if it’s the hair or the editing that I dislike more. Either way, it’s all just…nope).
It’s unfortunate that this list was a ranking and not a simple list because by Kaminsky’s standards, the cherry pie is still delicious. It’s warm, crumbly, and at the end of the day, a classic. Get it with a scoop of ice cream, and you’ll be in heaven.
Anyone would be lucky to enjoy this pie, but it simply has too much competition to rank any higher.
6. Coconut Cream Pie
Coconut is just one of those flavors that seems to divide opinion. When mixed into a drink, it’s tropical and delicious, but when shavings are added to a dish, people instantly become suspicious. I am of the opinion that, in any form, coconut is a delight.
And, it seems that the chefs at Kaminsky’s agree, because they have clearly put some effort into creating a stellar pie.
Coconut Cream Pie is by no means a bad pie. In fact, it’s a great pie!
However, I prefer a bit more substance to my pies, which explains its position on these rankings. Order it, and you won’t be disappointed.
5. Apple Pie
Apple Pie is one of those desserts that is nearly impossible to screw up. I mean, it’s THE American Pie! There are nearly 350 million people in this country, and a lot of them know how to make a good apple pie.
The Kaminsky’s version is a perfect example of top-tier craftsmanship. The crust is golden and crunchy, and the inside warm and sweet.
Its position on this list is purely down to its popularity. While everyone loves this pie, it’s been outranked by sheer originality.
4. Bourbon Pecan Pie
The Bourbon Pecan pie is a real punch of flavor and texture. It’s sweet, but has the bourbon for balance. The pecans are crunchy, but the filling is gooey and smooth.
It’s a little on the heavy side, but we’re not eating dessert to be light and healthy. Want to lighten it up a little bit? Add a dollop of whipped cream!
Don’t be fooled, this pie is fantastic, but there are just a few better ones further down.
3. Key Lime Pie
In my experience, Key Lime pie is like cilantro; you either love it or hate it. Cilantro haters can at least claim that their opinion is genetic and out of their control (I’m still doubtful), but I’m confident that those who speak out against Key Lime pie have simply never had a truly good slice.
Well, consider Kaminsky’s the Patient Zero for changing opinions. People often call Key Lime pie a “slice of paradise”, and this is no exception. It revels in its simplicity, boasting amazing tang, a crunchy crust, and perfectly whipped topping.
Don your Tommy Bahama and blast the Jimmy Buffet, cause this pie rocks for real.
2. Oreo Mousse
The smooth, airy quality of mousse pairs perfectly with the crunchy Oreo, making every bite a textural symphony.
This pie has the perfect balance between cookie and cream, while providing an original twist in the latter half with a mousse instead of the more traditional icing or cream.
1. Tollhouse Cookie
This magnificent pie is comprised of equal parts chocolate and nostalgia, bringing back memories of mom’s cookies growing up. In fact, I feel the exact same feeling of excitement after placing my order as I did when my mom said she just put a fresh batch in the oven.
While Kaminsky’s has a litany of delicious treats, this one tops the bill without a doubt.
All pies are first come, first served, so make sure to get there in time to order your favorite pie!
