929 Kitchen & Bar

Looking for a trendy, fun place for a drink and a bite in the Vista? You’ve found it at 929 Gervais Street. 929 Kitchen & Bar is owned by young, hip partners Karen and Sean and their silent partners who have dreamed for a long time of serving up authentic Korean food with a modern twist here in their hometown of Columbia.  Low Res 929 Ad

Located in an historic red brick building, 929 shows off its owners’ passion for the past with exposed brick walls and polished original wood floors. Modern industrial lighting sparkles above and gorgeous tables (some are shined-up tree trunk slabs) and cool seating invite guests and conversation below. The bar is buzzing non-stop as some of the best-looking cocktails are being mixed, shaken and stirred.

Newly opened, Kathy (me), Sarah (our staff writer) and Steven (Sarah’s husband) visited last week on one of their first nights. Excellent and friendly waitstaff were knowledgeable about the menu.  We tried a number of things… starting with Mandoo (Korean Fried Dumplings) that were really wonderful delightful bites (crunchy pillows with a savory filling).  I was tempted by the Korean Tacos and the Bulgogi (Philly steak sandwich with truffle fries) – decided to save these for a future visit – and went full-out Korean with the Bibimbap (loved the name ). This colorful collage of veggies and seafood (calamari and octopus) with sauteed mushrooms, spinach, carrots and pickled radish was served over white rice with a red pepper paste on the side.  So many tastes and textures had my buds doing the happy dance.

Sarah had the Japchae Noodles with Veggies and she loved it. The noodles are made from sweet potatoes and have a unique translucence.  A nice selection of sauteed vegetables truly complement the noodles. Steven tried the Korean Braised Beef Short Ribs and enjoyed the tender-as-can-be beef as it fell from the ribs. Served with rice and vegetables with a tasty soy sesame sauce.

You have to try the Hooteok Ice Cream for dessert! This chewy Korean pancake that is more like a large soft cookie is filled with brown sugar and cinnamon and topped with vanilla ice cream… it’s big, so plenty to share!

Drinks? Sapporo Japanese beer (on tap) for me and Steven while Sarah tried the Tito’s Macha Mule (Tito’s, Macha Tea Green Syrup, Owens Ginger Beer).  Relaxed and refreshed we were.

You really should get down to 929 Kitchen & Bar and enjoy Korean in Columbia…. you’ll love it!

Compton’s Kitchen :: The Best in Home Cooking

Sometimes ya’ just want to “cuddle up” to food… to rekindle memories of Mama in her kitchen, checkered apron, wooden spoon in hand, stirring that big pot of goodness.  To be able to remember so fondly weekends with pancakes drenched in yummy syrup and loads of savory bacon and eggs!  Home cooking is like nothing else. Put all your fancy chefs aside for a moment and experience the goodness of country cooking.

Compton’s Kitchen in West Columbia is just the place. The waitresses are all about “Honey Pie”, “Sugar” and “Darlin'”. Come by for breakfast or lunch and experience Southern hospitality like no place else.  Recently the ColumbiaFoodieNews.com staff enjoyed lunch at Compton’s Kitchen and here is what we ate and how we felt about it:

Kathy: Chicken Salad Plate – a generous scoop of homemade chicken salad, made withchicken-salad just the right amount of mayo and pickles. Served with a quartered hard-boiled egg and tomato slices on a crisp, fresh lettuce bed. “I love chicken salad and this is the best I have had in ages. Really reminds me of what my grandmother made when we went to visit her. Absolutely delicious.”

Comptons BurgerCarmen: Pimento Cheeseburger & Fries – just the right amount of house-made pimento cheese which was super cheddar-y. The burger was hand-patted and the waitress asked how she liked it cooked. Yes! Carmen ordered it “her way” and it was grilled to perfection. Which reminded Carmen of how her husband grills her burger just the way she likes it at home. Carmen: “Not only was the burger amazing, the fries were crinkle-cuts, crisped to perfection. I also want to note that the Sweet Tea was a 10 out 10!”

Tina: Club Sandwich – a club sandwich is not something Tina orders everyday.  She wasn’t expecting such a huge mouth-watering stack of bacon and ham and cheese on toast., with fresh tomatoes and lettuce.  She had trouble finishing it! It came with crispy crinkle-cut fries, a great side with this classic sandwich. “I will definitely order this again!  And I vote this Sweet Tea a 10+! And I am the company expert on Sweet Tea!”

Sarah: Fish Sandwich :: Sarah was delighted with the Fish Sandwich, which came with a side of crinkle fries and a pickle. Sarah: “The large portion of flaky white flounder was lightly pan-seared with a cornmeal crust, and served up hot with lettuce and tomato on a soft bun. It was a fresh, filling and delicious lunchtime meal!” Sarah hails from Maryland and has enjoyed fresh seafood her entire life. Everyone at the table looked enviously at this giant sandwich!

Weekday Therapy: Liberty on the Lake

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I want to take ya to Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Wings BOGO, fish tacos, baby why don’t we go into Irmo, for nachos….*

Unseasonably warm temperatures (even for Columbia) had the Gardener Media team wanting to experience one last taste of summer for their Weekday Therapy outing. What could be more perfect than a big, shaded deck, sparkling blue water and cold drinks? The place for that is Liberty on the Lake in Irmo, where, they say, “The only thing better than our food is the view”!

Liberty’s Sunset Happy Hour drink specials include $3 Liberty Brews, $3 Domestic Drafts, and $2 PBR cans, as well as $1 off House Wines, $3 Sangria, and $1 off Well Liquors. With 48 beers on tap, unique draft beers and craft brews and Liberty’s own microbrews, they will always have a brew for you! Our server, Jessica, was very patient and helpful as we pored over the various menus and made our selections.

Berry Sangria

Team member Carmen loves sangria, and thoroughly enjoyed the sweet Berry Sangria she ordered – a perfect summertime beverage! We chose several appetizers to share: Southern Fried Shrimp, Crispy Calamari, Baked Pretzels, and Chicken Nachos. The shrimp were large, fresh, and crispy, with a tangy/spicy Bonfire Sauce that would work with just about anything!

The calamari were perfectly seasoned and breaded, and came with their own Citrus-Curry Aioli sauce. Team member Lynn was a huge fan of the Baked Pretzels we got, with their salty, garlic butter-basted flavor coming through. It came with both lager-grain mustard and cheddar-beer cheese for dipping.

Southern Fried Shrimp

The Chicken Nachos didn’t disappoint either, the green-chile-and lime-marinated chicken deliciously complemented by black beans, poblano queso, pico de gallo, sour cream and jalapenos.

Chicken Nachos

Miriam opted for an entree, Liberty’s Freedom Burger – a Certified Angus Beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, a fried egg, lettuce and tomato.

The Freedom Burger

We then did something we almost never do: we ordered dessert! Key Lime Pie and Bananas Foster Cheesecake were decadent, but we told ourselves we deserved it! All of this food illustrated to us what we already knew, that you really can’t go wrong ordering at Liberty!

Bananas Foster Cheesecake!

Liberty on the Lake is always a fun time. In addition to their great Sunset Happy Hour specials, they also have some brand new Daily Specials you’ll want to check out that include BOGO Wings on Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Wine Down Wednesdays (featuring Lowcountry Boil), Thursdays are Burgers and Brews, Fish Fridays, and for the weekend, it’s Tap Into Football game day fare and drink specials. You Have to Try this Place: Sure Fire Tacos

Columbia certainly has come a long way in terms of taco options! These days true taco-aficionados seek out restaurants where they are made with fresh and innovative ingredients, and there’s no greater example of this than Sure Fire Tacos and Tortilla Grill, which Foodie writers Miriam and Sarah recently visited for lunch.  You may not have noticed the change in signage… Sure Fire is on Gervais Street near Motor Supply.  Look for the logo on their building: Sure Fire Taco Logo

Sure Fire Tacos originated in Texas, and calls its cuisine “Tex-Mex with a twist”. The menu is full of genuine, Texas-inspired items that are influenced by exotic flavors and inventive ingredients. Flour tortillas are rolled and baked at the restaurant daily, giving each dish a foundation of freshness. Then the Signature Tacos, Burritos, Nachos and Bowls are all assembled with various fixings that you’ll only find at Sure Fire, like al Pastor pork that’s been marinated in fresh pineapple juice and spicy chorizo seasonings, slow-cooked and tender chopped Brisket, their delicious Avocado Ranch, taco, and house Queso Blanco sauces, six different scratch-made salsas, sweet and spicy mango-habanero salad, flavorful cilantro lime rice, flame-roasted black bean and corn salad, zesty Mexican slaw, and Mexican Street Corn.

Sarah ordered both the Moby Dick and Big Hass tacos, while Miriam went with the La Playa and the Hen House for her meal. Sarah is a big fan of fish tacos, and this one did not disappoint! The fried, moist, flaky white fish was topped with Sure Fire’s own house-made, spicy Mexican slaw, avocado and crunchy tortilla strips, and some added hot sauce for good measure. The real star for her though, was the Big Hass. The fresh, crispy, fried avocado was wonderful, and made more so with the addition of black beans, pico de gallo and Queso Blanco! This taco was unlike any she’d had before.

Miriam very much enjoyed the Hen House taco, with its perfectly grilled chicken, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and Queso Blanco, especially as it was topped with Sure Fire’s unique Avocado Ranch sauce. The La Playa ended up as her favorite, though. How could it not be, with plump, grilled shrimp, Mexican slaw, and Pico. Even the freshly fried tortilla chips and salsa bar were outstanding! The two also found the decor to be really pleasing; lots of open space, tastefully designed and with live plants adding a fresh, summery feel. The bar is an inviting one, and on warm days, Sure Fire also has outdoor patio seating available. Drinks are another thing Sure Fire does right; their signature drinks are hand made using no mixes, but instead fresh fruits and even house-made cane sugar flavorings for a sweet and refreshing taste with every sip!

The quality of the food is what you notice most of all at Sure Fire. Our tacos were a steal at $3.99 each, and easily filled us up. On Taco Tuesdays at Sure Fire you can get two tacos, small chips and their fabulous queso for just $8, and on Thirsty Thursdays they have $2 drafts with the purchase of Nachos or a Bowl. Plus, on Sundays, kids 10 years and younger get a FREE kids meal with the purchase of a Bowl, Burrito, Nachos or Quesadilla and drink!

You Have to Try this Place: Lima Peruvian Cuisine

The first time I tried Lima Peruvian Cuisine (on Rosewood Drive inside the Jim Casey Fireworks complex), I felt a bit uneasy as I read the menu. Nothing sounded familiar, and although I consider myself fairly adventurous, and the menu had a photo of each dish, I didn’t know what to expect.  I hadn’t looked on a map of South America lately to know where Peru is located (I have since then!) and didn’t know if I should expect something similar to Mexican food or what.  Peruvian food is very different from Mexican food.  Not a taco in sight.  Peru is a country on the Pacific coast of South America, and hence, has many traditional dishes made with seafood.  That was fine by me.  I love seafood.

Lima Peruvian Food and Drink.jpg

I asked Ruth, the congenial smiley owner of Lima Peruvian Cuisine, what she would suggest I try, considering I had not eaten this type of food.  She pointed to Causa and to Choros a la Chalaca.  I chose them both.  Causa is made in a mold and is quite a beautiful little dish.  Two layers of mashed potatoes seasoned with Peruvian spices and a hint of lemon are on either side of a delicious filling made with, your choice, of tuna, chicken, shrimp or vegetable salads. I tried the shrimp salad.  Served cold, it was refreshing.  I couldn’t believe that cold mashed potatoes could taste this good!  The Choros a la Chalaca were mussels served on the half shell, marinated in lime juice.  They came topped with a yummy combination of tomatoes, cilantro, onions and fresh corn.  Hands down, the best mussels ever.
I was so excited about this wonderful lunch experience, I raced home that evening, gushing with enthusiasm.  My husband said he’d like to try it, so we went that night!  He 20170314_123345tried the Lomo Saltado – thin strips of beef sauteed with fresh onions and tomatoes, and served with rice and french fries.  I asked Ruth if that was traditional… rice and french fries, and she said yes, that french fries are very popular in Peru.  The potato is very popular, served many ways. I tried the Leche de Tigre… I am afraid if I tell you the ingredients you won’t try it, but you should!  Okay, here goes: ground fish marinated in lime juice, onion, Peruvian rocoto chilies, ginger, garlic and cilantro, and accompanied with shrimp.  It was wonderful – like ceviche! And I had a salad along with it.  Their salads are different from what we’ve come to expect here in the USA –  they contain potatoes, beets and avocado, and other items (depending on the salad).  All is served fresh and made to order.  We loved it for dinner too!
The atmosphere is bright and cheerful with traditional woven cloths adorning the tables.  Peruvian souvenirs are for sale in a case near the entrance.  Ruth has applied for a liquor license so hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail with our next meal there.  You really have to try this place! — Kathy Gardener

Or if you want to share, order the Sundae Fundae, which is Grill Marks MEGA dessert. You’ll love very large spin on a classic favorite!

They have a large variety of desserts and drinks. From Floats, Marks Famous Milkshakes, Spiked Floats, Shaketails (milkshakes minus the milk. Add liquor!), Beer Shakes (spun with homemade vanilla ice cream) to Freakshakes the possibilities seem to be endless. So whether you feel like a brownie or a beer milkshake you are in the right place.

Grill Marks has even crafted a special FreakShake in the spirit of Halloween. Wow! It is a nerds shake topped with ice cream and green whipped cream. They smothered it with monster gummies, oreoes, sprinkles, then drizzled with chocolate and strawberry puree and topped with a creepy gummy EYEBALL! Ask your server about it today.

View their ENTIRE menu here!! It will leave your taste buds forcing you to visit asap.

Grill Marks is also a favorite brunch spot. They serve brunch on Saturdays & Sundays from 11am – 3pm. It’s the perfect chance to try out their Ultimate Bloody Mary (pictured on left below) or a yummy Benedict burger with a couple of Bellini’s! You just can’t go wrong when given those two choices.

This past Thursday I ate at Grill Marks with my boyfriend for the first time and LOVED it. I had a foster puppy with me and they have a wonderful “outdoor dining” area, though I was still “in” the restaurant which was neat. From where I was sitting I could see the moon in the sky and a few tables over Governor Nikki Haley was dining too.  I felt like it was a very relaxed atmosphere and our waitress was great too. I ordered from their special menu for Restaurant Week Columbia – get 3 for $15! I enjoyed their homemade Chocolate Milk shake, delicious BCB burger, and a side of skinny fries. And oh my goodness – I was NOT disappointed. They had mayo, ketchup, and mustard on the table, so my burger was messy and amazing! My boyfriend did not order off the special menu for Restaurant Week and ended up with a generous side of onion rings (we devoured them together!) and their Hawaiian Punch Burger – Applewood Smoked bacon, pepper-jack cheese, grilled pineapple, jalapeño pesto, lettuce, & tomato. The onion rings tasted really good to me and I liked dipping them in the sauce that was served with them. Our foster pup slept under my chair the entire time and enjoyed the bowl of water they brought out for her. They also sell dog treats (Grill Barks) that a dog shouldn’t have to go without;) It was a great night and we enjoyed walking along Gervais Street after our meal. View the special menu that I ordered off of here. Officially a fan of Grill Marks!! Enjoy, Foodies!

Twin Peaks

Have you noticed the impressive bronze elk standing at attention on the corner of Gervais and Pulaski Streets and the “Twin Peaks” sign on the building behind it? Their tongue-in-cheek moniker and the slogan “Eats… Drinks… Scenic Views” belie the fact that behind the facade lives a culinary giant and an incredible entertainment experience.  If I was able, through the written word, to shout really, really loudly “you’ve gotta try this place!” I would do it.

I was absolutely blown away by Twin Peaks’ food and drink.

Chicken sliders Twin Peaks.pngThe apps. We started by splitting an order of Buttermilk Chicken Sliders, a pair of battered fried chicken sandwiches, served on house made buttermilk black pepper biscuits. These fat little biscuits are to-die-for.  Layers of warm goodness, buttered and toasted. The moist little chicken breast offered up crunchy texture and was topped with an amazing combination of hollandaise, jalapeno gravy (both house made) and American cheese, along with a slab of their signature “Billionaire Bacon”.  Billionaire Bacon is thick cut, spiced just right and caramelized in the Twin Peaks’ oven every morning. Two hands needed to eat these babies!

Before we could finish the sliders, our sweet little server brought out a basket of thin and crispy warm tortilla chips along with a trio of house-made dips, knownTwin Peaks nachos.jpg as the “Triple Play.  Amazing. My fave, the “smashed avocado”, is a delicious combination of chopped avocado, tomato, onion and a blend of spices that makes this truly the best guacamole ever.  That’s why they don’t call it “guacamole”… it’s in a class by itself.  Another dip was the home-made salsa, a flavorful sauce made daily with chargrilled tomatoes and peppers and just the right amount of spices – you can taste more than just the heat.  Wonderful. The third dip was a chipotle queso… house-made from scratch.  Finally the mozzarella bites.  I NEVER order these as they are always a frozen then fried cruddy breaded cheese in the shape of a stick.  I definitely will be ordering the Twin Peaks’ Mozzarella Bites again.  Lightly breaded with panko bread crumbs and made-to-order, they’re nice-sized cubes of high quality mozzarella served with homemade ranch dressing and marinara sauce.  You’ll fall in love after one bite.  Click on this ad and get a special offer – buy 6 wings and get 6 wings free!Twin_Peaks_Banner_ad

The beer.  OMG. A 22 oz. frosted mug of Yuengling never looked so good.  I learned that Twin Peaks washes their beer mugs by themselves at 180 degrees, so they’re clean as a whistle and dried thoroughly before they’re frozen at -10 degrees. No chunks of ice sliding off while you’re trying to drink. Nope. I put the glass to my lips and got the most refreshing delight on a hot Columbia afternoon… tiny ice crystals of beer tickling my tongue.  Mugs at Twin Peaks.pngThe Twin Peaks’ draft beer system was custom-made to keep beer at 29 degrees. Electronic signage in the restaurant lets patrons know the exact temperature of their drafts at any given moment. It defies science and logic but the beer doesn’t freeze. It is absolutely cold and refreshing.  32 beers on tap including local brews from River Rat, Conquest, Palmetto Brewing, Thomas Creek and more. They also serve 4 signature beers brewed just for Twin Peaks.

The whiskey. Have you ever had whiskey served over a hand-crafted ice ball, that has been formed in mere moments before your very eyes? Me neither. Watching them create the ice ball was so much fun!  A chunk of ice is put into their 18 pound aluminum press, which pulls the cold out and causes it to melt, leaving only a perfectly condensed sphere of solid ice that is then plunked into your cocktail glass. Ice ball at Twin PeaksYour spirits are poured over the top of the ice ball, which melts at an incredibly slow and even rate in order to avoid diluting the distinctive flavors and aromas of your drink.  Twin Peaks’ whiskey selection rivals any in town, offering 60+ different distills, and includes 19 Kentucky Bourbons, 10 American Whiskies and Ryes, 15 Scotches (try the Johnnie Blue or Macallan 18 year) and a selection of Canadian and Japanese blends.

The entrees. I tried the Greek Salad.  The folks at Zorba’s better sit up and take notice.  The Greek Salad was incredible. A combination of spring mix (my favorite salad greens) along with baby kale, pepperoncini, artichoke, red onions, grape tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese and crunchy fried capers (a first for me… who would think to bread and fry little capers? A genius thought that one up!)  I also ordered a skewer of grilled shrimp for a nominal additional charge.  Loved ’em. Nice sized with grill marks! A house-made herb vinaigrette dressed it out and it was no-kidding incredible.    My lunch-mate ordered the Trophy Trout, which Twin Peaks buys fresh and is chargrilled and finished with a roasted garlic lime butter.  Our server told us this dish is so good it was featured on the cover of an Atlanta’s Flavors magazine.  It came with mashed potatoes (handmade throughout the day) and fresh veggies. Thumbs way, way up!  Our third table guest ordered a Billionaire’s Bacon Burger – hand-pressed and seared on the grill.  Burger and beer at Twin PeaksLove bacon? This fella is laced with bacon, served on a fresh, never-frozen, locally-baked bun and dressed with sriracha pimento cheese, billionaire’s bacon, lettuce, tomato, bacon beer mustard and bacon mayo! Served with aromatic, beautiful, fresh cut fries. You’ve gotta try this place!

The place for sports. Sports fans – this is THE PLACE to watch any televised game. Twin Peaks subscribes to every sports package available… ALL pay-per-views, every MLB game, NFL game, NHL game, NBA game, college game… all of ’em. And patrons are treated to 60 big screens (all of them either 60, 70 or 80 inches wide!) in a seating arrangement that allows every guest to see at least 6 screens at any one time!  Twin Peaks tv's

The decor. The decor reminded me of a fishing lodge in New Hampshire that I visited as a child.  Hand-hewn wood paneling lines the interior walls, a large canoe hangs from the ceiling, multiple stone fireplaces glow with warmth (in cooler weather) and the furnishings are beautifully rustic, hand crafted and feature soft upholstery.  I sat on a bar stool for almost 2 hours and stayed comfy.   The walls that face Gervais feature garage doors that roll up in nice weather and sections can be cordened off for private parties, including fireplaces for you and your friends to sit around.

The cheerleaders.  A female staff of servers reminded us of a bevy of beautiful college cheerleaders – they served us with wide smiles and classic, southern hospitality.  Whatever you’ve heard about this place and the dress of their staff, relax.  You’ll feel comfortable in here with your wife, your girlfriend and your kids.  The Twin Peaks’ staff wears the same type of apparel you see on a cheerleader at a football game or on a lifeguard at the beach. Their aim is to make everyone at your table feel comfortable and have a great experience!Twin Peaks servers

The price. A gourmet bar and food experience with a casual dining price tag. Seriously.  The average food/drink tab is a mere $16! That’s amazing. And, Twin Peaks offers a 20% discount for all military/first responders & USC Student, faculty and staff with Valid ID.

The parking. A generous free parking lot behind the building and parking all along Pulaski Street.  Find that anywhere else in the Vista.

Bottom line. You have to try this place.

You Have to Try This Place: Moriarty’s Irish Pub

When James Pickle (great name for a restaurant proprietor!) met with his chef, Devin Maes, to develop a menu for the all new Moriarty’s Irish Pub, he told Devin that one of his top priorities was serving Moriarty’s patrons the BEST BURGERS in Columbia.  That’s a tall order in a town known for great burgers.  Undaunted, Devin worked tirelessly, putting his years of experience to the test.  An amazing burger was born  – a unique blend of high Moriarity's Burgerquality beef brisket and short rib, combined with a signature blend of smoked peppers, coriander, mustard seed and roasted peppercorns (daily roasted in house!) grilled over an open flame. Placed on artisan brioche buns, brushed with house-made infusions of oregano oil, basil oil, rosemary oil or garlic oil (depending on type of burger ordered) and grilled.  Fresh lettuce and ripe tomatoes, lager-drenched red onions and your choice of 6 different house-made sauces.  The restaurant even makes its own burger pickles, using homemade sweet and spicy vinegar (the menu calls them “quick-pickled sriracha cucumbers”).  Burger variations available with awesome toppings include The Smuggler (topped with diced tomatillos and poblanos, swiss cheese, and a honey jalapeno sauce) and The Fully Loaded Paddy Wagon (with topping choices that include a fried egg, a crunchy onion ring, jalapenos, bacon, salsa and tabasco).

In addition to serving excellent burgers, they also have a varied menu that includes Appetizers, Salads and Sandwiches.  One unique category: Gaelic Fare including Isle favorites like Gaelic and Guiness Stew,  Cottage Pie, Highland Poached then Grilled Bangers and Mash, and the like.  Like the burgers, everything is made-from-scratch, in-house (including their Corned Beef!) Moriarity's Bar

Their pricing is reasonable and we found that, the both times we tried it, the service was outstanding.

The bar is busy.  They have most extensive Irish whiskey selection in the City of Columbia, including:

  • Hellcat Maggie
  • Teeling Small Batch, Single Malt and Single Grain

They also offer:
