929 Kitchen & Bar

929 Gervais St. | 803-764-3825

The food at 929 Kitchen & Bar is inspired by ancient Korean traditions. Items range from authentic favorites, like Katsu, Korean BBQ Short Ribs and Bibimbap, to new twists on Korean fare, like Kimchi Nachos and Beef Bulgogi Tacos. It will be open for lunch, dinner and brunch, so you’ll have plenty of chances to try all of 929’s unique dishes!

We did a little Q & A with Karen Choe, managing partner at 929 Kitchen & Bar. Here goes:

Q: What is your relationship to Korean food?

A: My silent partners and I grew up eating Korean food and always had a desire to introduce this cuisine to our hometown (Columbia). We all love to cook and dine out.

Q: What do you like best about your new location in the Vista?

A: We had been searching for our location for over a year. We all had the same concept in mind. Exposed brick and in a historical building.  I think we found an absolutely perfect spot.

Q: What are a couple of dishes you would recommend to someone who is not familiar with Korean cuisine?

A: Definitely Bibimbap which is a dish serve with just the right balance of veggies and meat served with rice in a large bowl. And served with our signature pepper paste sauce. Mixing all the ingredients together in the bowl also makes it interesting and fun. And if you are vegetarian or not a fan of spicy dishes, I recommend Japchae.  Panfried sweet potatoes starch noodles with veggies and your choice of protein.

929 Kitchen

Interior 929 Kitchen and Bar929 Kitchen & Bar is located in the Vista at 929 Gervais Street, in a beautiful space with stained wood, exposed brick and modern lighting (bubble chandeliers!). The tasteful decor is likely due to Manager Karen Choe’s background in Interior Design.

At this point, the new staff is trained, the soft opening has occurred. The restaurant is slated for a mid April opening date. Stay tuned to Foodie News for more information about 929 Kitchen & Bar!

O’Hara’s Public House | Lexington

Gaelic saying: An rud is annamh is iontach. (The thing that’s seldom is wonderful.)

O'Haras Public HouseGreater Columbia’s dining scene continues to expand and become awesome-er all the time.  People who’ve dreamt of operating unique eateries, pubs and other foodie ventures are getting the nerve up (and the capital up) to move forward on their dreams. Especially as they see the success that others around town are experiencing, doing the same.  Case in point: O’Hara’s Public House in downtown Lexington on Main Street.

Matt O’Hara worked a handful of years in food service before beginning a 20-year stint in sales and marketing. But inside Matt’s head was a dream of running an authentic neighborhood Irish pub, where friends and family could hang out for casual dining and drinking. A celebration of community, food and music… where the furnishings and atmosphere could make one feel transported to a pub far, far away. Earlier this year, Matt and his wife Michele found the ideal location, and friends who shared their excitement about the concept. Lexington residents Rebecca and Arlen Wingard partnered up with the O’Hara’s and the dream grew wings.

The Brazen Head - Ireland's oldest pub

The Brazen Head, Ireland’s Oldest Pub… where the O’Hara’s got some inspiration!

Recently, Matt gave us a tour of the construction site that will soon house O’Hara’s.  There will be 3 distinct spaces – the dining room, the “Pub”, and a new deck out back. Each space will afford about 60 seats for patrons. In the interior spaces, the construction crew has taken the plaster off and exposed gorgeous brick walls, the floors have had a hardwood rebirth, and the drop ceiling tiles removed to reveal a very cool original metal ceiling that has been restored.

O'Haras barMichele’s brother Brian, a carpenter in Raleigh, NC, has custom-built a front and back bar in his shop that was inspired by those found in pubs in Ireland. Comfortable and upscale upholstered bar and dining room seating is on order. The windows that face onto Main Street in the bar area will be able to be opened for fresh air, and patrons will be able to sit and people-watch or traffic-watch from bar stools pulled up to the window counters. The outside deck in the rear will feature tables as well, covered by a pergola.  Live music will be offered and musicians have already been booked.

Ireland Flag

Matt says he plans to offer 6 traditional Irish dishes, including Shepherd’s Pie, Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips among others. Food is clearly a passion with Matt as he showed us pictures of gigantic sandwiches he is experimenting with as well as a “Five-Way”.  Yep, those of us from Southwestern Ohio know that as a staple of life – chili over spaghetti, topped with beans, onions and shredded cheddar. OMG. Can’t believe we are going to be able to get that HERE, in the Palmetto State.

O’Hara’s is scheduled for a soft opening in mid-April, and will have their Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday April 28, with food, music and fun!  Visit their Facebook page here and their website here.

Hunter – Gatherer Brewery at Rosewood Hangar

1402 Jim Hamilton Blvd.

According to City documents, “The Curtiss-Wright Hangar was the first building to be built at Columbia’s Owens Field Municipal Airport in 1929. The hangar was built by the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service and was officially opened in April 1930 with a large celebration, dedication, and air show. Although the hangar was initially used for passenger and airmail service, it was eventually also used for flight training, airplane storage, and airplane maintenance and repair. Of the approximately 35 hangars built by Curtiss-Wright Flying Service by the 1930s, Columbia’s Curtiss-Wright Hangar is one of the last to remain standing and is largely unaltered from its original design.”

We were so excited when we heard that Hunter – Gatherer Brewery would be expanding into such a neat, historical place from their current location at 900 Main St.

Image from City Documents

The Curtiss-Wright Hangar was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in the late 1990s for its contributions to air transportation in Columbia and throughout the state and today the hangar is undergoing a big renovation and is expected to open this summer. How exciting! Kevin Varner, brewer and owner of Hunter-Gatherer brew pub announced that in celebration of their 20th anniversary (Hunter-Gatherer Brewery and Alehouse opened in Columbia on Oct. 7, 1995) they will be opening this second location at Owens Field that will feature a taproom, a 17bbl (527 gallon) brew house, a bottling and kegging line, and an observation deck overlooking the airport. Foodies, the Hunter-Gatherer at 900 Main Street will stay the same so no worries if you’re a regular.

Renovation is well underway. There were many painted signs on the hangar. One sign, above the sliding hangar doors, originally said “Curtiss Wright” and “Flying Service.” This Curtiss-Wright sign is in the process of being re-painted to match the original and another sign will be painted (on the opposite side of the building) saying “Hunter – Gatherer” and “Brewery & Alehouse.” It’s going to look awesome! We can’t wait to dine at this historical establishment, as we watch planes fly overhead.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

457 Killian Road  | Columbia SC

The very first area Freddy’s is under construction on Killian Road in northeast Columbia, just off I-77.  Never heard of Freddy’s?  You certainly will… and soon.  Freddy’s has grown its stellar reputation in other fredhead-at-freddysparts of the country, and we are setting our sights (and tastebuds) on checking this out in February 2017!  This family-friendly eatery has a retro-50’s feel to its decor and a tasty menu with an appeal that will span the generations.   No “hamburgers” here.  We’ve heard that Freddy’s steakburgers are often voted “best burger” in competitions across the country… the company uses premium quality lean beef in its steakburgers.  “Every Freddy’s Steakburger starts with premium, lean, American, 100% pure ground beef – no additives or fillers. We press the patties thin to create deliciously crispy edges and always cook them to order so they’re steaming hot. Freddy’s way may take a little longer, but that’s what makes Freddy’s Steakburgers so special. Top two patties with Freddy’s Famous Seasoning, two slices of melting cheese, mustard, onions and crunchy pickle planks, all on a fresh, perfectly toasted bun and you have our one and only Freddy’s Original Double!”  Sounds great, eh?  Choose sides from baked chips, fries or applesauce.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard isn’t your average ice cream parlor. In fact, it isn’t ice cream at all! Thanks to a time-tested churning process that minimizes ice crystals and air, Freddy’s Frozen Custard is smoother and richer than ice cream and frozen yogurt.  Check out the menu details and lovely pics at the Freddy’s website! Follow them on Facebook and watch for more details about an opening date: click here.

Famous Toastery

119 Sparkleberry Lane | 2 more locations to come!

The FIRST location of Famous Toastery that is coming to Columbia, SC is expected to open mid-January! The building that used to be a McAllisters, is under construction right now. How exciting!

Famous Toastery is a North Carolina-based eatery that serves fresh ground coffee, breakfast famous-toasterysandwiches, omelets, stuffed french toast, hash browns, grits, biscuits & gray and more for breakfast. View their full breakfast menu here. They are also open for lunch, Foodies! Savor their BLT, Grilled chicken sandwich, meatloaf, Tuna salad, & blackened chicken Caesar wrap. View their full lunch menu here. You can order breakfast or lunch at any time in the day.

I spoke with Kim Kenney, franchisee, on the phone last week and now can’t wait to taste items off of their menus. Famous Toastery spent 7 years perfecting their model before they began to franchisee it out. They have a special service concept that I had never heard of before. It is called, “Every Server is your Server,” so essentially you will never have to look for a server. It is a team effort and every server is there to make your dining experience as enjoyable as possible.

Famous Toastery is also famously known for their FRESH ingredients that are made every morning. Nothing is frozen. Kenney raved about their fresh squeezed orange juice! Plus, they serve fresh lobster rolls on the weekends and every table can expect fresh corn bread on their tables with homemade apple butter. Weekends and Famous Toastery go hand in hand.

Now what is very exciting about Famous Toastery is that they will have another location at 1301 Main Street Suites 200 & 300, as they are taking over the space of the Atlanta Bread Company and the Columbia News Stand. It is a neat spot along Main Street. Something unique that will be offered at the Main Street location, according to CEO, Robert Maynard, is that this downtown location will offer a “Grab n’ Go” system, as well as their normal dine in experience. This way if you are in a time crunch you can easily place your order online and pick it up! This Main Street location is expected to open the first of the summer or late spring of 2017.

This franchise requires 10 weeks of intense training, so you can be sure that your experience will be identical to that of the original location in North Carolina. Cool fact: CNBC named Famous Toastery in their article, “6 hot restaurant franchises to watch” in December 2015 and where it is based in Charlotte they have won MANY awards. The New Year can’t get here soon! Stay tuned.

Operating Hours:

7 days a week! 7am – 3pm

2400 Devine St.

Tallulah is expected to open mid-December, as renovation on the former Dianne’s on Devine is coming along! Tallulah, a modern American restaurant, will in part boast a seasonal menu that will change weekly. They plan on serving medium sized dishes that will allow each person to order 2-3 plates. Your palette will not be limited in savory experiences, Foodies! Build your meal however you would like! You could even just grab one plate for a snack. This sounds like this is the perfect restaurant for the person that struggles with picking just one dish when they go out to eat. Tallulah

The restaurant will be divided into sections and will have a bar/lounge area where you will be able to walk in (no reservations) and a more formal dining room that will take reservations, as well as a glass enclosed patio area. On nice days they can open the windows, but on cold, rainy, or humid days the windows will be closed, yet you will still have a view.

I spoke with Russell Jones on the phone last week. Jones is a Columbia native and has been in the restaurant business for about 19 years! He moved away from South Carolina 12 years ago and while away worked at Jack Rose Dining Salon for about 2.5 years as their executive chef. Jones will be the executive chef at Tallulah and we can’t wait to taste Tallulah’s amazing dishes. Visit their Facebook page here for updates on opening!

BBQ and Beer… Coming Soon

The Pot Smoker BBQ

931-A Senate Street pot-smoker-bbq

Expected to open in January, this is the first franchise of the Pot Smoker BBQ. Phillip Pye, owner, has experience with opening restaurants in Cola, as he opened Takosushi on Assembly Street in 2010 and later sold it in December 2014. Phil has spent a lot of time training at the original Pot Smoker BBQ location in North Augusta and we can’t wait to try this place out.

Enjoy appetizers like crispy smoked wings, red neck nachos, smoked mushroom cap (vegetarian option), plus entrees like pork sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, their pulled pork plate, rib & pork combo plate, 1/2 a chicken plate & more. They will also have many sides to choose from – hash and rice, loaded potato, mac-n-cheese, baked beans, Cole slaw, and black eyed peas to just name a few. Round out your meal with one of their mouthwatering desserts – Carnegie Deli New York Cheesecake, Bomb Diggity Brownie, Rosemarie’s Pound Cake, Pecan Pie or Buttermilk Pie. The menu will be the same as the original location – click here to view it. Except for one small thing. Because they have a pizza oven in the restaurant, they may have something unique from the original Augusta location. Barbecue Pizza!!

The Pot Smoker BBQ will have fountains out front and the largest porch in the Vista area. Renovations are coming along – follow them on Facebook to keep track of progress & to know exact opening date closer to.

Hours of Operation:

Columbia Craft Brewing Company

790 Huger Street/520 Greene Street

A microbrewery will open at 790 Huger Street aka 520 Greene Street, Foodies! This new craft brewing production company is coming to town & we are pretty excited!

Interior of Craft Brewing Co

Existing building interior – going to be renovated! Picture from the City of Columbia.

According to documents filed with the city, Columbia Craft Brewing Co. will occupy a converted warehouse and would be considered a production brewery. The microbrewery will include a 3,500-square-foot 15-barrel brewing facility, an 1,800-square-foot tap room and an outdoor beer garden.

They would have a tour-tasting room onsite that will allow for seating & consumption of beer onsite. Their outdoor area, labeled as a beer garden, could be made pet friendly, so this could be quite the hang out spot.

Their tasting room would be large enough to accommodate group tours, beer tour stops, special events and general walk-in traffic. They do not plan on having an elaborate menu, but may have an area for a hot dog cooker and pre-packaged items such as nuts, crackers, pretzels, etc. We will see!  This place is definitely about the beer.

The company has already trademarked the phrase “craft beer famously hopped” and a logo, according to a letter their CPA sent the city. “We have also protected names such as … ‘Famously Pale,’ ‘Famously Gold,’ ‘Famously Stout,’ and ‘Famously Red’ for an initial lineup of beers,” the letter reads. Columbia Craft has also hired “an award-winning professional brewer.”

We can’t wait to see this place be developed and renovated & we will update here when we know more information.
