929 Kitchen & Bar’s New Winter Menu

Korean Fried Chicken! Unbelievably Crunchy!

I had heard from a Korean friend of mine that Korean Fried Chicken is better than any other fried chicken because it stays crunchy from start to finish. He was right! 929 Kitchen & Bar has added Korean Fried Chicken to its menu and it is amazing. You can hear your friends crunching down on this from across the table! The secret is in its 24 hour preparation… let it just be said that Koreans take fried chicken seriously. This is not a “dredge and fry” like the fast food joints you may be accustomed to here in the States.

You can order it as wings, tenders or as a half chicken. The sauces are soy garlic, garlic spicy (I tried this and it was my fave – just enough kick) and Snow White (a tangy sweet onion sauce). The small-size wings or tenders are served ala carte; the large-size orders are served as meals with choice of a side. Or order the half chicken (cut up) and it’s a meal served with a side. No kidding… you are gonna love this chicken.

I ordered a Sapporo draft beer with my wings. I love its signature crisp, refreshing flavor and clean finish, perfect with fried chicken. 929 has a good selection of draft beer.

Ttukbaegi Bulgogi with pickles on the side

Ttukbaegi (pronounced “to-baggie” and means “earthenware bowl”) Bulgogi This is the Korean equivalent of Grandma’s Chicken Noodle soup. Ttukbaegi Bulgogi is a warm-your-heart stew made with bulgogi (marinated beef, slice thinly and chopped), carrot, green onion, onion, mushrooms and sweet potato noodles. Sweet potato noodles are made with sweet potato starch and are clear. The broth was so tasty, I could have just eaten that. Slightly sweet and absolutely yummy. This is a very healthy dish. Newly added to the menu and served at dinner only. It comes with a side of interesting and delicious Korean pickles (cucumber, onions and kimchee) and white rice. They give you a nice fat wooden spoon to eat this with… which makes it all the more homey.

To accompany my ttukbaegi bulgogi, I chose a new apple cider 929 Kitchen is featuring – Appalachian Mountain Brewery’s Scarlett Rose. Wow. If you like apple cider, this is hands down, one of the best.

929 Kitchen & Bar is located at 929 Gervais Street in the Vista.
